Second Grade Teacher
Tennessee Temple University, BS SCACS Certification
Twenty Years Teaching Thirteen Years at Westgate
The second grade uses the Bob Jones curriculum for reading, English, spelling, handwriting, history, math and science. The subjects correlate well together to provide a strong comprehension-based program. The BJ math curriculum gives students a thorough understanding of the concepts presented. Students gain mastery of the addition and subtraction facts through daily practice and drills, and multiplication and division are introduced. Problem solving, calendar problems, measurement skills, telling time, and money exchanges are presented.
Special emphasis is given to developing creative writing skills as we study grammar and the writing process in English. Students learn to plan, draft, revise, proofread, and publish many types of writing. Children learn to organize their thoughts and write them as complete sentences. They also learn to use correct punctuation marks and to capitalize correctly.
Second graders love heritage studies! We learn about kings and queens in Europe and about colonial America through the Revolutionary War. The children enjoy performing a play about Nathan Hale, But One Life to Lose. This culminates our year in heritage studies.
Important daily emphasis is given to the teaching of the Word of God as we study Moses and the children of Israel. Biblical principles are taught and character training is integrated into the daily program. The children memorize many Bible verses and enjoy singing Patch the Pirate songs together.
The second graders join first and third graders each week for choir. The children love to visit the computer lab bi-weekly. Early keyboarding skills are introduced and the children enjoy playing computer games to reinforce these skills. The children also have an art class and visit the library each week to check out books.
Field triips are both educational and fun. A trip to the Walnut Grove Plantation correlates nicely with our study of early American life. The children also love to visit Roper Mountain Science Center or Riverbanks Zoological Park as a part of our study of science. It is a wonderful way to end our very special year together!
